ABOUT US

The Safety Culture team, operating out of Saint Mary's University under the supervision of Dr. Mark Fleming, comprises professionals and researches sharing in interest in applied safety culture. Researchers tackle projects brought forth by partnerships with local and national organizations, as well as from the enthusiasm and creativitiy of the team's members. Recent work has included evaluating the metrics used in safety culture assessment, spanning a wide range of hazardous industries. 

Dr. Mark Fleming is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Saint Mary's University. He received his Bachelor’s in Psychology and Master’s in Human Factors from Aberdeen University and his PhD in Psychology from The Robert Gordon University in Scotland. Mark is an applied psychologist with nearly 20 years of experience in industrial health and safety management in high hazard industries including the offshore oil and gas, nuclear power, petrochemical, power generation and construction. He is dedicated to developing practical and valid tools to assist organisations to prevent harm. Currently, Dr. Fleming’s research includes investigating methods for measuring and improving safety culture, safety motivation, safety leadership, and aviation safety. He advises many Canadian and international organisations (e.g., International Atomic Energy Agency) on safety culture assessment and improvement.

Dylan Smibert  is a Master's student at Saint Mary's University, with an active interest in personnel selection and safety culture. 
 

Timur Ozbilir is a PhD student in the Department of Psychology at Saint Mary’s University. He received his Bachelor’s in Psychology from Istanbul University and his Master’s in Applied Psychology from Saint Mary’s University where he is currently pursuing a PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. His research interests include corporate social responsibility, safety culture, and personality. Timur also has an Advanced Diploma in International Business Administration from Kensington College of Business.


Joanna Solomon is completing her Master's in Applied Psychology at Saint Mary's University, with a strong interest and emphasis in measurement, assessment, and statistics. She completed her Bachelor's with Honours in Psychology at Acadia University. Her research interests include personnel selection, safety culture, organizational citizenship behaviours, and test development. She hopes to continue to contribute to the field of safety culture assessment and public safety as a psychometrician. 

 

Anjali Daté received her B.A. in psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON, where she primarily studied forensic and social psychology. During her time at Carleton, Anjali completed the first phase of a study investigating the use of threat assessments in schools following violent incidents. She is currently attending Saint Mary’s University’s Industrial/Organizational Psychology program.
